How much does it cost to repair a TV screen in South Africa?

Nobody phones a repair company to make conversation. You want a number, and you want it before you commit to anything. So let us be upfront about why this article does not open with a price list, and then be as useful as we can within that.

"TV screen repair" describes at least five completely different jobs, and they do not cost remotely the same. One of them — replacing a physically broken panel — costs so much that we decline the work on principle. Another, replacing failed backlight strips, is one of the better-value repairs you can do on a large television. Both get called "screen repair" by people ringing us, and the gap between them is enormous.

What follows is how the cost is actually built up, which faults sit at which end of the range, and how to judge whether a quote you have been given is reasonable.

Why we will not quote over the phone

It is not evasiveness. It is that a phone description cannot distinguish between faults that differ in price by a factor of ten.

"My screen is black" is the clearest example. That single sentence covers a failed backlight strip, a failed backlight driver circuit, a T-Con board fault, a mainboard video fault, and a genuinely dead panel. The first is a moderate repair on most sets. The last is usually a reason to buy a new television. There is no honest way to price that description without measuring the set.

Be wary of anyone who does give you a firm figure on the phone. Either they are quoting the worst case to protect themselves, in which case you are being overcharged if the fault is simple, or they are quoting the best case to win the booking and the number will change once the set is open. Neither is what you want.

"Screen repair" is five different jobs

Here is how the common faults compare. We have deliberately not attached rand figures, because parts pricing moves with the exchange rate and availability, and a number published today would mislead you next quarter. What does not change is the relative difficulty and what drives each one.

Notice that only the last row is genuinely bad news. Everything above it is a component or board replacement on a television whose most expensive part — the panel — is intact and fine.

What actually drives the price

Screen size

Size affects both the parts and the labour. A larger panel has more backlight strips, takes longer to separate safely and needs two people to handle. But here is the useful part: repair cost rises more gently with size than replacement cost does. A repair on a 65-inch set is therefore usually a far better proposition than the same repair on a 32-inch one, simply because the alternative is so much more expensive.

Brand and model

Not all brands are equally supported locally. Well-distributed brands tend to have parts arriving in days; less common models, discontinued lines and grey imports can take weeks or prove impossible. Two identical faults on two different brands can therefore produce very different quotes and very different timelines. Which part, and whether it can be repaired rather than replaced

This is the biggest single variable. A board that can be repaired at component level — replacing the failed capacitor or regulator rather than the whole board — costs a fraction of a replacement board. Age of the set

Age matters less directly than people assume — a seven-year-old television with a good panel and an available part is perfectly worth repairing. What age really affects is parts availability and the likelihood that something else fails soon afterwards. Labour and call-out

Why a cracked panel is in a category of its own

If your screen is physically cracked, has a spider-web pattern, or shows a spreading ink-like blot, this section is the answer to your question and the rest of the article does not really apply.

A liquid crystal panel cannot be repaired. There is no procedure that mends one. It can only be replaced, and the panel is the single most expensive component in the television — frequently approaching, and often exceeding, the price of a new set of the same size once labour and the risk of handling damage are included.

Insurance is worth checking here before you write the set off. Accidental damage cover, if you have it, treats a cracked panel very differently from a component failure.

The repairs that are almost always worth doing

Some repairs are, in our experience, close to automatic decisions on a set of reasonable size and age.

Backlight strips on a large television. The panel is fine, the fault is well understood, and the alternative is replacing a large and expensive set. If the torch test shows a faint image — described in our guide to a TV with sound but no picture — this is usually where you are.

Power supply faults. Among the more economical repairs a television can need, and one of the most common. Often repairable at component level.

A single dead HDMI port. Small job, big convenience gain, and it does not touch the panel. See HDMI port repairs.

How to judge a quote you have been given

You do not need technical knowledge to sanity-check a repair quote. You need four answers.

What exactly has failed? A quote should name the fault — "backlight strips", "power supply board", "T-Con" — not just "screen problem". Vagueness at quoting stage tends to become vagueness at invoicing stage.

Is the part being repaired or replaced, and is it new? Both are legitimate. You are entitled to know which.

What is the warranty on the workmanship? Any competent repairer stands behind their own work for a defined period. Ask what that period is and what it covers.

What happens if the repair does not solve it? Occasionally a second fault is masked by the first. A fair business tells you how that is handled before it happens, not after.

And one broader test: does the quote compare sensibly to a replacement? A rough working rule is that if a repair costs more than roughly half the price of an equivalent new television, it needs a strong justification — a very large screen, a premium panel, or a set otherwise in excellent condition. Costs people forget to ask about

Four things that surprise people, none of which should be a surprise if you ask first.

The diagnosis fee and whether it comes off the repair. The call-out or transport charge, particularly outside the immediate service area. Whether a wall-mounted set needs removing and remounting, which is real labour. And whether a second fault found during the repair is quoted separately — on older televisions this genuinely happens, and how a business handles it tells you a lot.
