LG TV repairs — from webOS to OLED

LG builds the OLED panels most of the industry uses, and runs webOS on nearly everything it sells. Both bring their own failure patterns, and we know them well.

OLED board repairs webOS recovery Honest on burn-in

LG’s two personalities: the OLED flagship and the LED workhorse

LG occupies an unusual position. It manufactures the OLED panels that Sony, Philips and Panasonic also use in their premium televisions, and it sells a vast range of conventional LED sets underneath them. So an ‘LG repair’ can mean two quite different jobs.

On the LED sets, the faults are familiar: power supply failures from surge damage, backlight strips degrading and producing a black screen with sound, T-CON boards causing lines and bands. All repairable, all routine.

On the OLEDs, the electronics are equally repairable — power boards, mainboards and T-CON boards all fail and can all be fixed. What cannot be fixed is burn-in, and we will always tell you that plainly rather than taking money for a repair that cannot succeed.

The detail

LG faults we repair most

Different across the LED and OLED ranges.

Will not turn on

Power supply board. The standard South African fault, driven by grid surges. Repairable on both LED and OLED sets.

webOS is stuck, frozen or looping

The LG logo appears and the set restarts, or the interface freezes and will not respond. Corrupted firmware. A recovery reloads a clean image at no parts cost.

Black screen with sound on an LED set

Backlight failure. The panel is fine; the LED strips behind it are not. Affordable and straightforward to repair.

Vertical lines or bands

T-CON board or ribbon connection faults, and LG sets are no more prone to these than anyone else’s. Frequently repairable.

OLED burn-in

Permanent, and not repairable by anybody. If a channel logo or a news ticker is permanently ghosted into the panel, no repair exists. We will tell you honestly rather than charging you to find out.

Magic Remote will not pair

LG’s pointer remote connects over Bluetooth and loses its pairing after firmware updates or battery changes. Re-pairing takes minutes.

FAQ

LG TV repairs — your questions answered

The things people actually ask us on the phone, answered straight.

Not sure what is wrong?

WhatsApp us the make, the screen size and a short video of what the TV is doing. We can usually narrow the fault down before a technician is even dispatched.

Can LG OLED burn-in be repaired?

No. Burn-in is permanent degradation of the organic pixels and there is no repair for it — not by us, not by LG, not by anyone. The built-in pixel refresh can clear temporary image retention, which looks similar, but it cannot reverse true burn-in. We will always be straight with you about which you have.

My LG TV is stuck on the logo screen.

A webOS boot loop, caused by corrupted firmware. A firmware recovery reloads a clean image and it costs you nothing in parts. It is the first thing we try, and it usually works.

My LG has sound but no picture.

On an LED, NanoCell or QNED set, that is backlight failure and it is repairable. On an OLED, it points at the power supply or the panel drive, and that needs a proper diagnosis to separate.

Is an LG OLED worth repairing?

If the fault is a board — power supply, mainboard, T-CON — then very much so. These are expensive televisions and a board repair costs a small fraction of replacing one. If the fault is burn-in or a damaged panel, then no, and we will say so.

My Magic Remote has stopped working.

It has most likely lost its Bluetooth pairing, which happens after firmware updates and battery changes. Re-pairing takes a couple of minutes. If the remote itself has failed, we can supply and pair a replacement.

What is QNED and how is it different from OLED?

QNED is LG’s LED-backlit LCD range with quantum dot and NanoCell layers — broadly comparable to Samsung’s QLED. It has a backlight, so it can suffer backlight failure, but it does not suffer burn-in. OLED has no backlight and each pixel makes its own light.
