LED TV repairs — and why the backlight is nearly always the culprit
An LED TV is an LCD panel lit from behind by LED strips. Those strips are the part that fails, and when they do, you get a black screen with perfect sound. It looks terminal. It is not.

‘LED TV’ is a slightly misleading name, and the confusion costs people money
An LED television is not made of LEDs in the way an OLED is. It is an LCD panel — a liquid crystal layer that blocks or passes light but produces none of its own — with an array of white LEDs behind it providing the illumination. The LEDs are the torch; the LCD is the stencil.
This architecture is why LED televisions fail the way they do. The LCD panel itself is remarkably robust and rarely fails on its own. The LED backlight, which runs hot and runs constantly, degrades. When enough LEDs in a string fail, the whole string goes out, and the protection circuit shuts the backlight down entirely.
The result is a television with perfect sound, a perfectly good panel, working inputs, a functioning smart platform — and a completely black screen. Customers understandably assume the screen has died and start shopping for a replacement. In fact, the fix is a set of backlight strips, and it is one of the more affordable repairs we do.

Backlight and power dominate the list.
Black screen, sound is fine
The signature LED backlight failure. Shine a torch at a sharp angle across the screen — if you can faintly see the picture, the panel is alive and only the backlight has gone. Very repairable.
Dark patches or clouding across the screen
Individual LEDs or partial strings failing. The illumination is becoming uneven. Replacing the strips restores it.
The TV will not turn on at all
Usually the power supply board, and in South Africa that usually means surge damage. It is our single most common fault, and it is a repair rather than a write-off.
It turns on and then shuts off after a few seconds
Frequently a failing backlight dragging the power board out of tolerance and tripping its protection circuit. The symptom looks like a power fault; the cause is the backlight.
Vertical or horizontal lines on the screen
T-CON board or ribbon connection faults. Often repairable, though a genuine panel driver failure sometimes is not, and we will tell you honestly which you have.
The picture is dim even at full brightness
The backlight LEDs are degrading with age. They do not fail all at once; they fade. Replacing them restores the brightness the set had when it was new.

Almost certainly the LED backlight. It is the most common LED TV fault there is. The panel is fine, the mainboard is fine, and the television is simply not illuminating the picture it is producing. Do the torch test to confirm, then get it repaired — do not replace the set.
How much does an LED backlight repair cost?
It varies with screen size and how many strips need replacing, but it is consistently one of the more affordable repairs we do — and always a small fraction of the price of a new television of the same size. We quote a fixed price after diagnosis.
How long do LED backlights last?
Typically many years, but heat is the enemy. A television in a closed cabinet, or one that runs bright for long hours every day, will degrade its backlight considerably faster than one with good airflow. Sets in hot regions of South Africa fail earlier than sets in cool ones.
What is the difference between LED and LCD?
Essentially, the lighting. Both use an LCD panel to form the image. Older LCD televisions used CCFL fluorescent tubes to light it; modern ‘LED’ televisions use LEDs. So an LED TV is an LCD TV with a better backlight. We repair both.
Can dark patches on the screen be fixed?
Yes. Dark patches or uneven brightness are failing backlight LEDs or strings. Replacing the affected strips restores even illumination across the screen.
My LED TV turns on then switches off immediately.
Very often a failing backlight pulling the power supply out of tolerance, which trips the protection circuit and shuts the set down. The symptom looks like a power fault but the cause is the backlight. Diagnosis matters.
