A television stuck in a restart loop looks catastrophic and very often is not. Corrupted firmware is a software problem, and software problems should never cost you hardware money.

A television that shows the manufacturer logo, freezes, and restarts — over and over, indefinitely — is one of the most alarming faults a customer can experience. It looks completely dead. It is not.
In the majority of cases, what has happened is that the firmware image has become corrupted: a power cut during an update, a failed download, a flash memory sector that has degraded. The television is trying to boot, failing partway through, and restarting to try again. It will do this forever.
The correct first response is a firmware recovery — reloading a clean firmware image onto the set. It costs nothing in parts. It is what we attempt before we go anywhere near a mainboard. Where the flash memory itself has genuinely failed, that is a component-level repair, and we can do that too.

Stuck on the logo screen
The set powers up, displays the brand logo, and goes no further. Classic corrupted firmware. Recovery is the first thing we attempt.
Endless restart loop
Logo, restart, logo, restart. The boot process is failing at a consistent point. Almost always firmware, occasionally failing flash memory.
A firmware update that failed halfway
Power interruption during an update is the single most common cause of a bricked television in South Africa, for reasons that need no explanation. It is recoverable.
Frozen menus and an unresponsive interface
The picture is there, but nothing responds. Often a corrupted system partition or exhausted memory. A factory reset and firmware reload usually clears it.
Settings that will not save
Change a setting, restart the TV, and it has reverted. That points at a failing flash memory chip — and that is a component-level repair rather than a software one.
Apps that will not update or install
Frequently a platform version problem. Bringing the firmware current sometimes resolves it; sometimes the platform has simply aged out of support and we will tell you so.

Almost certainly not. That is the signature of corrupted firmware, and it is recoverable in most cases. The hardware is usually completely healthy — it simply cannot finish booting.
The power went out during a firmware update and now the TV will not start.
This is one of the most common ways a television gets bricked in South Africa, and it is exactly what firmware recovery exists for. Do not write the set off. It is very often fully recoverable.
Can I do a firmware recovery myself?
For some brands there is a USB recovery procedure you can attempt, and if you are comfortable and you use the exact correct firmware for your model, it is worth trying. The risk is real though: flashing the wrong image, or losing power mid-flash, can make the situation considerably worse.
How long does a firmware recovery take?
Usually under an hour, including the diagnosis and testing. Some brands are slower than others, and some require the television to be in a specific recovery mode that takes patience to enter.
What if the firmware recovery does not work?
Then the flash memory chip itself has most likely failed, and it needs replacing at component level. That is a mainboard-level repair, and we will quote it separately. You are never charged for a repair you have not agreed to.
Will a firmware update fix my apps?
Sometimes. If your apps stopped working because the firmware fell behind, updating it may bring them back. If the app provider has dropped support for your television’s platform entirely, no firmware update will help — and in that case a streaming stick is a far better spend than a new television.
