Curved TV repairs

Curved TV repairs — the same faults, handled more carefully

A curved television is a conventional panel under permanent mechanical tension. Everything inside it fails the way it would in a flat set. The difference is entirely in how carefully it has to be handled.

Careful handling Standard board faults Samsung and LG

The curve is a shape, not a technology

Curved televisions had a good run between roughly 2014 and 2019, and then quietly disappeared. Underneath the shape, though, they were entirely conventional: an LED-backlit LCD panel, or occasionally an OLED, bent into a gentle arc.

That means the electronics are ordinary and the faults are ordinary. Power supply boards fail. Backlight strips fail. T-CON boards fail. Mainboards fail. Everything we do on a flat television, we do on a curved one, and the repairs are neither harder nor more expensive.

What is different is the handling. A curved panel is held in its curve by the chassis, and it is under continuous mechanical stress. Laying it face down on a flat surface — standard practice for a flat television — can crack a curved panel. We do not do that. Curved sets are handled on their edge, by two technicians, on proper padding.

The detail

Curved TV faults

Ordinary faults, extraordinary care.

Black screen with sound

Backlight failure, exactly as on a flat LED set. Repairable, and the panel is usually perfectly healthy.

Will not turn on

Power supply board. The most common television fault in Gauteng, and no different on a curved set.

Lines or bands on the screen

T-CON board or ribbon connection faults. On a curved panel the ribbons are under slightly more stress, which makes connection faults marginally more common.

Uneven brightness across the curve

Backlight strips degrading unevenly. Replacing them restores uniform illumination.

Smart platform and app faults

Samsung curved sets run Tizen; LG runs webOS. Software-first diagnosis, as with any smart TV.

Stand or mounting problems

Curved televisions need curved-compatible brackets, and a great many generic brackets are not. If yours is wobbling, the bracket is very likely wrong for it.

FAQ

Curved TV repairs — your questions answered

The things people actually ask us on the phone, answered straight.

Not sure what is wrong?

WhatsApp us the make, the screen size and a short video of what the TV is doing. We can usually narrow the fault down before a technician is even dispatched.

Are curved TVs harder to repair than flat ones?

The electronics are identical, so the repairs themselves are no harder and no more expensive. What is different is the handling — a curved panel is under permanent mechanical tension and must never be laid face down on a flat surface. That is the main reason we send two technicians.

Can you still get parts for curved TVs?

For the common faults — power boards, backlight strips, capacitors, T-CON boards — yes. Curved televisions were mostly Samsung and LG, and parts for those remain reasonably obtainable.

My curved TV wobbles on its bracket.

The bracket is very likely not designed for a curved set. Curved televisions need curved-compatible mounts, and a great many generic brackets are not, despite what the packaging claims. It is worth fixing properly — a stressed panel is a panel that will eventually crack.

Is a curved TV worth repairing?

If the picture is good and the fault is a board, yes — the repair costs a fraction of replacing it, and you cannot buy a new curved television any more anyway. If the panel itself is damaged, no, and we will tell you so.

Do curved OLED TVs exist?

Yes, LG made several curved OLED models. Everything on our OLED page applies to them — including the fact that burn-in is permanent and not repairable.

Do you repair cracked curved screens?

No. We do not repair cracked or broken screens on any television, curved or flat, and we do not buy broken TVs.
