The TCL bargain is real — and so are its consequences
TCL will sell you a 65-inch 4K television for a price that would have seemed impossible a few years ago, and the panel in it is genuinely decent. That is not marketing; it is why the brand has grown so fast in South Africa.
What TCL economises on is what you cannot see in the shop: the power supply board and the backlight assembly. Its backlight LED strips are driven relatively hard and cooled relatively modestly, which shortens their life. Its power boards use components built firmly to a price.
In practice this means TCL televisions come to us for two things, over and over: backlight failure producing a black screen with perfect sound, and power supply failure producing a set that will not switch on at all. Both are repairable, both are affordable, and in both cases the panel — the reason you bought the set — is fine.

Black screen with sound
The signature TCL fault. Backlight strips have failed. Do the torch test — if you can faintly see a picture, the panel is fine and the strips need replacing. Affordable, and it restores the set completely.
Will not turn on
Power supply board. Usually capacitors or a switching component. Cheap to repair on a TCL, and well worth doing.
Uneven brightness or dark bands
Partial backlight failure — some LED strings have gone, others have not. Replacing the affected strips restores even illumination.
Stuck on the TCL logo, or restarting
Android TV or Google TV boot loop, from a corrupted system partition. A firmware recovery reloads a clean image at no parts cost.
Apps crash or the set is very slow
Storage exhaustion on the Android platform. TCL sets often ship with limited internal storage and it fills quickly. Clearing it properly transforms them.
Roku models that will not update
Some TCL sets run Roku rather than Android. Different platform, similar principles — and we work on both.

No — and this is the most common TCL fault there is. The LED backlight has failed while the panel, the mainboard and everything else are perfectly healthy. Do the torch test: shine a bright light at a sharp angle across the screen, and if you can faintly see a picture, it is the backlight. That is an affordable repair.
Why do TCL backlights fail so often?
TCL drives its backlight LEDs relatively hard and cools them relatively modestly — it is one of the ways the price gets to where it is. The upside is that the panels are good and the repair is cheap. We often fit better-rated strips than the originals, which lasts longer.
Is a TCL TV worth repairing?
Usually yes. The panel is the expensive part and it is almost always fine. A backlight or power supply repair costs a fraction of replacing a large TCL, and it restores the set completely.
My TCL is stuck on the logo screen.
An Android or Google TV boot loop, caused by a corrupted system partition. A firmware recovery reloads a clean image and costs nothing in parts. Do not let anyone quote you a mainboard before this is attempted.
Why is my TCL so slow?
Storage. TCL sets frequently ship with limited internal storage, and Android TV degrades badly when it fills up. Clearing it properly — not just deleting an app or two — makes a substantial difference.
Are TCL parts available in South Africa?
Yes, and they are among the cheaper spares to source. Backlight strips and power board components for the common models are readily available, which keeps repair costs low.
