TV installation

TV installation and wall mounting, done properly

A television on the wall is only as safe as the fixing behind it. We mount into the correct substrate with the correct hardware, hide the cables, and set the whole system up before we leave.

Correct fixings Cables concealed Set up and tested

The bracket is not the hard part. The wall is.

Anybody can bolt a bracket to a television. The skill — and the risk — is in what happens on the other side. A 65-inch television on a cantilever arm exerts a genuinely serious pull-out force on its fixings, and it does so continuously, for years.

South African homes are built from a wide variety of things: solid brick, hollow block, concrete, drywall partitions, and in newer developments, drywall over steel studs. Each needs a completely different fixing. Using a brick plug in a hollow block, or a drywall anchor where a stud fixing was needed, is how televisions end up on the floor.

We identify the substrate before we drill, we use the correct fixings for it, and we do not compromise. If the wall genuinely cannot take the set, we will tell you that rather than mounting it and hoping.

The detail

What a proper installation includes

Rather more than hanging it up.

Choosing the right position

Height, viewing angle and glare all matter and are all easy to get wrong. A television mounted too high is a permanent, daily irritation. We will tell you honestly if the position you have in mind is going to be uncomfortable to watch.

Identifying the substrate

Brick, hollow block, concrete or drywall. We check before we drill, because the fixing depends entirely on what is behind the plaster.

Supplying the right bracket

Fixed, tilting, or full-motion. The bracket must be rated for the weight and the VESA pattern of your specific set, and there is no room for approximation here.

Concealing the cables

Chased into the wall and plastered over, run inside trunking, or routed behind the wall to a floor-level outlet. A wall-mounted television with cables dangling below it defeats the point.

Connecting the whole system

Decoder, soundbar, console, streaming stick. Connected properly, with the audio routing configured so that everything actually works together.

Setting it up and testing it

Network connected, apps signed in, channels tuned, remote paired, picture settings sensibly calibrated. We do not leave you with a mounted television and a box of manuals.

FAQ

TV installation — your questions answered

The things people actually ask us on the phone, answered straight.

Not sure what is wrong?

WhatsApp us the make, the screen size and a short video of what the TV is doing. We can usually narrow the fault down before a technician is even dispatched.

Can you mount a TV on a drywall or partition wall?

Usually yes, but it depends entirely on what is behind it. Drywall on timber or steel studs can carry a television if the bracket is fixed into the studs. Drywall with nothing behind it cannot, and no anchor will change that. We check before we drill and we will tell you honestly if the wall is not suitable.

Can you hide the cables inside the wall?

In most masonry walls, yes — we chase a channel, run the cables, and plaster over. In drywall we can often drop cables inside the cavity. Where neither is possible, good-quality trunking painted to match the wall is a neat and much cheaper alternative.

Do you supply the bracket, or should I buy one?

We can do either. If you buy your own, please check it is rated for the weight of your television and matches its VESA mounting pattern — a surprising number of brackets sold online are not what they claim to be. If we supply it, that is our problem rather than yours.

How high should a TV be mounted?

Lower than most people think. The centre of the screen should sit roughly at eye level when you are seated — typically 100 to 120cm from the floor for a normal lounge. Mounting a television above a fireplace looks tidy and is genuinely uncomfortable to watch for any length of time. We will say so, politely, before we drill.

Can you install the TV and the DStv at the same time?

Yes, and it is much the most sensible way to do it. One visit, one callout, and the cabling for both gets planned together and concealed together instead of one being retro-fitted around the other.

Will you set up my soundbar and decoder too?

Yes. Connecting the whole system and configuring it so that everything works together is part of the installation, not an extra.
