The mainboard is the brain of the television — inputs, processing, smart platform, audio and panel drive all run through it. Replacing it wholesale is expensive. Repairing it properly, very often, is not.

A dead mainboard is often a mainboard with one dead component
The television mainboard — the motherboard, the main PCB, whatever you want to call it — is where everything meets. Your HDMI inputs land on it. The tuner sits on it. The smart TV platform runs on it. Audio is processed on it. The signal that eventually becomes a picture is generated on it.
When it fails, the easy answer is to replace the whole board. Sometimes that is genuinely the right call. But mainboards are expensive, they are frequently on back-order in South Africa, and a great many mainboard ‘failures’ come down to a single failed component: a blown regulator, a cracked solder joint, a shorted HDMI protection diode, a dead memory chip.
Component-level repair means finding that one part and replacing it, rather than replacing the entire board around it. It takes more skill and more time, and it costs you significantly less. Where a board replacement is genuinely the better option, we will tell you that too.

The mainboard faults we see most often
Different symptoms, but they all lead back to the same board.
Boot loops and frozen logo screens
The television shows the manufacturer logo, then restarts. Then does it again. This is usually corrupted firmware or a failing memory chip on the mainboard. A firmware recovery is attempted first, because it is free of parts cost.
No picture at all, and no sound either
When both are dead but the power supply is confirmed healthy, the mainboard is the prime suspect. We isolate it from the panel to confirm before recommending anything.
Dead HDMI ports
HDMI inputs sit directly on the mainboard, and they are the first thing a surge finds. Often it is the protection circuitry that has sacrificed itself, and that is component-level repairable.
Smart platform failures
Apps that will not open, a home screen that will not load, settings that will not save. Sometimes software, sometimes a failing memory chip on the board. We establish which before spending your money.
Audio processing faults
Where the speakers are fine but there is no sound, or the sound is distorted, the amplifier section of the mainboard is often the cause — and it is often repairable in place.
Tuner and signal faults
No channels, or channels that will not scan, when the aerial and cable are proven good. The tuner section lives on the mainboard.

Usually, yes — especially on a mid-range or premium set. A component-level mainboard repair typically costs a fraction of a replacement board, and a small fraction of a new television. Where the repair cost starts approaching the value of the set, we will tell you honestly that it is not worth it.
Can you repair the mainboard if the model is discontinued?
Often we can, and this is exactly where component-level repair earns its keep. When replacement boards are no longer manufactured or imported, repairing the existing board may be the only option there is.
How do I know if it is the mainboard or the power supply?
You usually cannot tell from the symptom alone, which is why the diagnosis matters. A television that shows no life at all could be either. We measure the power rails first: if the power supply is delivering correct voltage and the set is still dead, attention turns to the mainboard.
My TV keeps restarting itself. Is that the mainboard?
Frequently, yes. A boot loop — logo, restart, logo, restart — usually indicates corrupted firmware or a failing memory chip on the mainboard. We attempt a firmware recovery first, because that costs you nothing in parts.
Do you repair mainboards on site or do you take the TV away?
It depends on the work. Straightforward component replacement and firmware recovery are often done on site. Fine-pitch work needing a microscope and a hot-air station usually means the set, or just the board, comes with us. We will tell you which before we start.
Will a mainboard repair fix my dead HDMI port?
Very often, yes. HDMI ports and their protection circuitry sit on the mainboard, and surge damage to them is common. In many cases the port can be repaired or re-driven without replacing the whole board.
