DStv Extra View — more rooms, one subscription
Extra View lets you run additional decoders on a single subscription. It is excellent value, and it is also where a lot of installations get quietly bodged. The cabling and the LNB have to be right.

Extra View is cheap. Doing it properly is not the same as doing it cheaply.
Extra View is one of the better deals DStv offers: additional decoders in other rooms, all running off one subscription, for a modest monthly fee per extra decoder. It is genuinely good value and it is very popular.
The trouble comes in the installation. Each decoder tuner needs its own feed from the dish. An Explora has two tuners; a second decoder adds more. Feed them by splitting a single cable and you will have a system that half works, drops channels, and fails whenever two people try to record at once.
Doing it properly means the correct LNB — a twin or a quad rather than a single — the correct number of cable runs, and the correct linking of the decoders on the MultiChoice side. It is not difficult work, but it does have to be done right, and a great many Extra View installations were not.

What Extra View actually requires

The right LNB
A single LNB feeds one tuner. An Explora alone needs two. Add a second decoder and you need more. A twin or quad LNB is not optional — it is the foundation of the whole thing.
Dedicated cable runs
Each tuner needs its own feed. Splitting one cable between decoders is the single most common Extra View bodge and it causes exactly the intermittent, maddening faults people complain about.
Correct decoder pairing
The decoders have to be linked properly on the MultiChoice side, with the primary decoder identified correctly. Get this wrong and the extra decoders will not authorise.
A dish with enough signal margin
Splitting signal across more tuners is less forgiving of a marginal installation. If the dish alignment was borderline before, Extra View will expose it.
Cabling to the additional rooms
Run neatly, clipped properly, and concealed where you want it concealed. This is usually the most visible part of the job and it is worth getting right.
Full testing across all decoders
Every decoder, every tuner, recording on one while watching on another. That is the whole point of Extra View, and it needs to be proven before we leave.

Can I just split my existing cable to a second decoder?
No, and this is the single most common Extra View mistake. Each decoder tuner needs its own dedicated feed from the LNB. Splitting one cable produces a system that half works, loses channels, and fails whenever two tuners are active at once.
Do I need a new LNB for Extra View?
Almost certainly, yes, unless you already have a twin or quad LNB fitted. A single LNB cannot feed the number of tuners Extra View requires. An Explora on its own already needs two feeds.
How many decoders can I link?
Typically up to three decoders on one subscription, depending on your package. We will size the LNB and the cabling for the number you actually want to run.
Can I record on one decoder and watch on another?
Yes — that is much of the point of Extra View. But it only works if each tuner has its own proper feed. Where people find they cannot do this, it is almost always because the installation was cabled badly.
Can you upgrade my existing installation to Extra View?
Yes. Usually that means upgrading the LNB, running additional cable to the new room, linking the decoders and re-checking the dish alignment. We will quote the whole thing upfront.
