Toshiba TV repairs — solid sets, sourceable faults

Toshiba televisions are well built and, when they do fail, they fail in conventional ways. Backlight, power supply and mainboard faults dominate, and all three are repairable.

Backlight repairs Power supply faults Component-level work

A brand that quietly does the job, and quietly fails in predictable ways

Toshiba does not shout as loudly as some of its competitors in South Africa, but it has been building televisions for a very long time and it builds them sensibly. The sets tend to be reliable, the panels tend to be good, and the failures — when they come — are the conventional ones.

Backlight failure is the most common: a black screen with perfectly good sound, caused by degraded LED strips behind an entirely healthy panel. Power supply failure is next, driven by the same grid surges that take out every other brand here.

Where Toshiba can get awkward is parts. Replacement mainboards for specific models are not always easy to source locally, which makes component-level repair the practical route rather than merely the cheaper one. That is work we do as a matter of course.

The detail

Toshiba faults we repair

Conventional faults, competently fixed.

Black screen with sound

Backlight failure, and the most common Toshiba fault. The panel is fine; the LED strips are not. Affordable to repair.

Will not turn on

Power supply board. Capacitors and switching components, repairable at component level.

‘No signal’ on every input

Could be the tuner section, could be the HDMI processing on the mainboard, could be the aerial or cable. We test the whole chain rather than assuming the television is at fault.

Dead HDMI ports

Surge damage. Port-level replacement, usually without needing a new mainboard.

Mainboard faults

Where Toshiba boards are hard to source, component-level repair becomes the practical route — and it is one we take routinely.

Smart platform freezing

Depending on the model, Toshiba uses Android TV or its own platform. Firmware and storage are the usual causes.

Toshiba TV repairs — your questions answered

The things people actually ask us on the phone, answered straight.

Not sure what is wrong?

WhatsApp us the make, the screen size and a short video of what the TV is doing. We can usually narrow the fault down before a technician is even dispatched.

My Toshiba has sound but no picture.

Backlight failure, most likely — it is the most common Toshiba fault. Do the torch test: shine a bright light at a sharp angle across the screen. If you can faintly see a picture, the panel is alive and the backlight needs replacing, which is an affordable repair.

My Toshiba says ‘no signal’ on every input.

That needs proper diagnosis. It could be the tuner, the HDMI processing on the mainboard, or — very often — the aerial, cable or wall point rather than the television at all. We test the whole chain rather than assuming.

Are Toshiba parts available in South Africa?

Common components — backlight strips, capacitors, power board parts — yes. Model-specific mainboards can be harder to source, which is exactly why we repair boards at component level rather than only replacing them.

Is a Toshiba TV worth repairing?

Generally yes. Toshiba builds solidly and the panels tend to outlast the boards driving them. Backlight and power supply repairs cost a fraction of replacing the set.

My Toshiba will not turn on.

Power supply board, most likely — the standard South African surge fault. It is repairable and it is one of the more affordable jobs we do.

Do you repair a cracked Toshiba screen?

No. We do not repair cracked or broken screens on any television, and we do not buy broken TVs.

Book a TV technician

Toshiba dark or dead?

Backlight or power board, most likely — and both are repairable. Tell us the model and the symptom.
