QLED TV repairs — premium panel, familiar faults

A QLED is an LED television with a quantum dot layer that produces far better colour. Impressive picture, and — usefully — a repairable one, because it still has a backlight and it still fails in familiar ways.

QLED is LED with a very clever extra layer — and that is good news for repairs

Marketing being what it is, QLED sounds like a cousin of OLED. Technically it is not. A QLED television is an LED-backlit LCD panel with an additional quantum dot film sandwiched in front of the backlight. Those quantum dots convert the backlight’s blue light into extremely pure red and green, which is what produces the vivid, saturated colour QLEDs are known for.

The important consequence, for anyone with a broken one, is that a QLED is architecturally an LED television. It has a backlight. It has a power supply board. It has a T-CON board and a mainboard. And it fails in the same familiar ways they do.

That is genuinely good news, because it means a QLED is repairable in ways an OLED with burn-in is not. Backlight strips can be replaced. Power boards can be repaired. Quantum dots themselves do not degrade in normal use, and QLEDs do not suffer burn-in the way OLEDs do.

The detail

QLED faults we repair

Familiar territory, on a premium panel.

Black screen with sound

Backlight failure. Same as any LED television, and just as repairable. The quantum dot layer and the LCD panel are almost always fine.

Will not switch on

Power supply board, usually surge-related. The most common fault in South Africa and one of the most fixable.

Uneven brightness or dark patches

Failing backlight LEDs or strings. Replacing the strips restores even illumination across the panel.

Colour looks washed out or wrong

Could be picture settings, could be the backlight degrading, occasionally a processing fault on the mainboard. We test before we condemn.

Lines or bands on the screen

T-CON board or ribbon connection faults, frequently repairable.

Smart platform faults

Samsung QLEDs run Tizen; TCL and Hisense QLEDs run Android, Google TV or VIDAA. App failures, boot loops and connectivity faults are all software-first problems.

Is QLED the same as OLED?

No, and the similar names cause real confusion. A QLED is an LED-backlit LCD television with a quantum dot layer for better colour. An OLED has no backlight at all — each pixel makes its own light. For repair purposes the difference matters: QLEDs have backlights that can fail and be replaced, and they do not suffer burn-in.

Can QLED TVs get burn-in?

In normal use, no. Burn-in is a characteristic of OLED’s organic pixels. QLED uses a conventional LCD panel with a backlight and does not degrade in the same way. It is one of QLED’s genuine practical advantages.

My QLED has sound but no picture.

Backlight failure, most likely — exactly as on any LED television. Do the torch test: shine a bright light at an angle across the screen and see if you can faintly make out a picture. If you can, the panel is fine and the backlight needs replacing.

Is a QLED worth repairing?

Generally yes. QLEDs are premium televisions and a backlight or power supply repair costs a small fraction of replacing one. Check the warranty first — many are recent enough to still be covered — and we will always point that out.

Which brands make QLED TVs?

Samsung is the main one, and it coined the term. TCL and Hisense also produce QLED and QLED-derived panels widely sold in South Africa. We repair all of them.

Do you repair cracked QLED screens?

No. We do not repair cracked or broken screens on any television, and we do not buy broken TVs. A replacement panel costs more than a new set.
