When DStv fails, your decoder is usually innocent

It is the natural place to look, because it is the part you can see. But your decoder sits in a warm, dry lounge and lives an easy life. The dish, the LNB, the cable and the connectors sit outdoors in the sun, the rain and the wind for years — and that is where DStv installations actually fail.

The LNB in particular — the small unit on the end of the dish arm — is an active electronic component permanently exposed to weather, and it is the single most common failure point in any DStv installation. It rarely dies suddenly. It fades, and you lose channels one at a time until somebody finally investigates.

So we test the whole system: signal at the dish, signal at the wall, cable integrity, connector condition, alignment, and only then the decoder. It finds the fault far faster, and it is a great deal cheaper for you.

DStv services

Everything we do on DStv

Installation, repair, alignment and setup — across the same areas we repair televisions.

01

DStv installation

Dish supplied and mounted, aligned with a signal meter, cabling done neatly and the decoder activated and demonstrated.

02

DStv repairs

Decoder faults, no signal, error codes and dish problems. We test the whole system rather than starting with the box.

03

DStv signal problems

E48-32, E16, E30, pixelation and rain fade. The codes are genuinely informative if you know how to read them.

04

DStv Extra View

Two or three decoders on one subscription. It needs the right LNB and dedicated feeds — not a split cable.

05

Satellite dish installation

New dish supplied, securely mounted into the correct substrate, precisely aligned and properly weatherproofed.

06

Satellite dish alignment

Knocked out of line by wind, a storm or a ladder? Two degrees is all it takes to lose your rain margin.

07

LNB replacement

The most common DStv fault by a wide margin, and one of the cheapest to put right.

08

Decoder setup

Explora, Explora Ultra and HD decoders connected, activated, scanned, paired and configured.

09

DStv relocations

Moving house or moving the television. A relocated dish is a new installation, and it must be realigned.

What separates a good DStv install from a cheap one

Four things, and all of them are invisible until they fail.

Alignment on quality, not just strengthIt is what gives you margin when it rains

The correct LNB for your setupSingle, twin or quad — Extra View needs more than one feed

FAQ

DStv questions, answered straight

Signal, installation and decoder questions we hear every week.

Not sure what is wrong?

WhatsApp us the make, the screen size and a short video of what the TV is doing. We can usually narrow the fault down before a technician is even dispatched.

Why does my DStv break up when it rains?

Rain fade — heavy rain absorbing the satellite signal. Every installation suffers it to some degree in a real downpour. But if yours breaks up in light rain, the installation has no margin, usually because the dish alignment is marginal or the LNB is degrading. Both are fixable and both are inexpensive.

What does E48-32 mean?

It means the decoder is receiving no usable signal from the dish. It is a signal-path error, not a decoder fault — the cause is almost always the LNB, a corroded connector, a damaged cable or a dish out of alignment.

How much does a DStv installation cost?

It depends on the dish, the LNB, how much cabling is needed and how many decoders you want to run. We quote the whole thing upfront — dish, mounting, alignment, cabling and setup — so there are no surprises.

Can you install my TV and DStv at the same time?

Yes, and it is much the most sensible approach. One visit, one callout, and the cabling for both gets planned and concealed together rather than one being retro-fitted around the other.

My DStv worked yesterday and now it does not.

If your subscription is paid up, it is a technical fault and it is almost certainly in the signal path outdoors. Sudden complete loss often follows a storm — a dish knocked out of alignment, or an LNB taken out by lightning.

Do you supply decoders?

Decoders and subscriptions are handled through MultiChoice. We will install, set up, activate and configure whatever decoder you have or acquire, including Explora and Explora Ultra.
