Plasma televisions stopped being made in 2014, but a great many are still running and a great many are still worth repairing. The board faults they suffer are well understood and thoroughly repairable.
Plasma televisions have not been manufactured since 2014, and yet we are still asked to repair them regularly — usually by people who have compared their plasma’s motion handling and black levels with a modern budget LED and decided, quite reasonably, that they would rather keep what they have.
The faults are well understood. Plasma panels are driven by sustain boards — the Y-sustain and Z-sustain — along with buffer boards that address the panel in sections. These boards work hard, they run hot, and they are the components that fail.
The symptoms are distinctive and diagnostic: a plasma with a failed Y-sustain typically shows a bright flash and then nothing. A failed buffer board produces horizontal lines or bands across a section of the screen. These are repairable, parts for the common failures remain obtainable, and the repair is invariably cheaper than replacing a television you were happy with.
The detail
Plasma symptoms are unusually diagnostic.
Classic Y-sustain board failure. The board attempts to drive the panel, fails, and shuts down. It is the single most common plasma fault and it is repairable.
Buffer board failure. Each buffer board addresses a section of the panel, so the fault appears in a band. Repairable, and the affected board is identifiable from where the band sits.
Power supply board, or a sustain board shorting and tripping the power supply’s protection circuit. Diagnosis distinguishes them.
Plasma televisions always hum a little — it is inherent to the technology. Buzzing that grows noticeably worse points at the power supply or the sustain boards deteriorating.
Plasmas are prone to it. Temporary retention usually clears if you run varied content or a full-white screen for a while. Permanent burn-in from years of a static channel logo does not clear, and is not repairable.

All plasmas hum slightly; it is inherent to how the technology works. If the buzzing has become noticeably louder over time, that points at the power supply or the sustain boards deteriorating, and it is worth having looked at.
